About the Role
The Environment Agency is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the environment, focusing on creating a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for people and wildlife. Water is central to all we do, from drinking and washing to recreation and industry. As a Hydrology Technical Officer within our National Water Resources Hydrology team, you will play a vital role in monitoring and assessing the water environment to support scientifically sound, cost-efficient operational and strategic decisions.

This early to mid-career technical role offers the opportunity to deepen your understanding of hydrological data and techniques, develop technical leadership skills, and contribute to positive environmental outcomes. You will provide hydrological analysis and data, support dry weather incident response, manage national datasets, and collaborate with the wider hydrological community to deliver professional advice and technical assessments.

You will be part of a dispersed national team, working flexibly from your nearest office or home, with occasional travel required. This role supports Environment Agency policy and helps deliver effective water resource management through the provision of expert hydrological knowledge and data interpretation.

Benefits
- A generous pension scheme of 19%
- Overtime opportunities through standby and incident pay
- 25 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays for full-time employees
- Two additional paid environmental outcome days to participate in community activities
- Established structured training programme and professional development
- Potential to enhance knowledge through apprenticeships
- Maternity, paternity, and adoption leave schemes
- Options for flexible and/or part-time working considered on a case-by-case basis

Requirements

Experience
- Desirable: Experience in an operational water resources hydrology role or a hydrology-focused postgraduate qualification.
- Experience analysing data and information to solve problems, with good numerical and computer literacy.
- Experience communicating technical information to non-technical audiences.
- Experience with programming languages such as R or Python, or PowerApps is advantageous.
- Membership of BHS, CIWEM, or similar professional bodies, possibly working towards chartership.
- Incident response experience or willingness to undertake an incident role with full training provided.

About you
- Enthusiastic about hydrology with an awareness of hydrological concepts including processes and catchment behaviour.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to plan, track, and deliver work to required timescales and standards.
- Good written and spoken communication skills.
- A desire to learn new skills and continually develop your knowledge.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a dispersed team and with external partners.
- Willingness to respond to incidents and provide business continuity support as required.
