About the Role
The Landscape Gardener will work within the multi-disciplined Landscape Team delivering high standards of landscaping and woodlands maintenance across the University estate. The team includes staff skilled in hard and soft landscaping, forestry, and machinery operation and maintenance. The role involves carrying out landscape maintenance and project works, assisting with new projects involving hard and soft landscaping elements, and operating a variety of vehicles and machinery including tractors (32 to 108 HP), Utility Task Vehicles (UTVs), Mobile Elevated Working Platforms (MEWPs), excavators, and forklifts.
The post holder will also be responsible for minor repairs and servicing of powered equipment such as pedestrian lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, and backpack blowers. They will assist in ensuring timely, high-quality service delivery and may be involved in emergency repair work.
Effective communication with line management is essential to provide updates on progress. The role requires a hands-on approach to ensure all landscape and woodland maintenance tasks are completed diligently, efficiently, and safely. Compliance with Health and Safety legislation and University policies is mandatory, alongside keeping up to date with developments in work practices, legislation, and best practice standards.
The Landscape Gardener will contribute to the day-to-day operations of grounds, workshops, equipment, and vehicles, supporting the Landscape Maintenance Team in maintaining a productive and safe working environment.

Experience
- Proven experience in providing a high standard of garden and landscape maintenance.
- Experience working within a multi-skilled landscape maintenance team.
- Experience in operating and maintaining machinery and equipment.
- Full driving licence with trailer BE category.
- Certification in machinery and equipment use training such as NPORS, NPTC, LANTRA, PA1 & PA6, IPAF or equivalent.
- Understanding of relevant legislation and Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.

Qualifications
