About the Role
The Landscape Gardener will work within the multi-disciplined Landscape Team delivering high standards of landscaping and woodlands maintenance across the University estate. The team includes staff trained in hard and soft landscaping, forestry work, and equipment and machinery operations/maintenance. The role involves assisting with new projects incorporating both hard and soft landscaping elements. Key responsibilities include carrying out landscape maintenance and project works on campus and Hermiston House Garden, operating a variety of vehicles and machinery such as tractors (32HP to 108HP), Utility Task Vehicles (UTVs), Mobile Elevated Working Platforms (MEWPs), excavators, and forklifts. The role also involves minor repairs and servicing of powered equipment including pedestrian lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, and backpack blowers.
The post holder will assist in ensuring timely, high-quality service delivery and may support emergency repair work. Regular communication with line management is expected to update on progress. The role requires a hands-on approach to ensure diligent, efficient, and safe completion of all landscape and woodland maintenance tasks. Compliance with all statutory regulations and University Health and Safety policies is essential. The post holder will keep up to date with developments in work practices, legislation, and best practice, contributing to continuous improvement within the team.

Experience
- Proven experience providing a high standard of garden and landscape maintenance.
- Experience working within a multi-skilled landscape maintenance team.
- Experience in operating machinery and equipment with relevant certifications such as NPORS, NPTC, LANTRA, PA1 & PA6, IPAF.
- Full driving licence with trailer BE category.
- Understanding of relevant legislation and Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 requirements.

Qualifications
- Certification in machinery and equipment use training (e.g., NPORS, NPTC, LANTRA, PA1 & PA6, IPAF).

- Desirable: Qualifications in RHS Level 2 or equivalent.
