About the Role
The City of London Corporation is seeking a talented design and heritage officer to join the Design Team within the City’s Planning service, working at the cutting edge of conservation and design. You will be part of a dynamic and welcoming team of architects, conservationists, accessibility and inclusion specialists, public realm experts, urban designers, and an archaeologist.

The Square Mile is an international centre for growth and a historic place of international significance where design and conservation are inseparable. Success requires a progressive, out-of-the-box approach to both disciplines.

Our team prides itself on pragmatism, quick action, and providing decisive, fluently articulated advice to all stakeholders. We value deference to the old, enthusiasm for the new, and a passion for inclusion.

As a member of the Design Team, you will provide urban design and conservation advice on the management, evaluation, and negotiation of a wide range of planning and listed building consent applications from pre-application through to delivery on site. You will work collaboratively across Development Management, Transport, Sustainability, Public Realm, Policy, and S106 Planning to ensure that charismatic design and heritage celebration are intrinsic to the delivery of growth in the Square Mile.

You will find and promote alternative design solutions where necessary to balance urban design and conservation issues, delivering good growth alongside high quality and innovative design. You will contribute to the development of policy, planning guidance, design guides, and Conservation Area Appraisals, always willing to think creatively.

Your approach will be inclusive and holistic, embracing landscape, biodiversity, public realm, access and inclusion, and the wider sustainability agenda. While you will have a flair for detail, you will also be able to see the bigger picture.

The City of London Corporation is committed to ensuring competitive and equitable pay and reward practices to support everyone in thriving in their work.

Requirements

Experience
Experience in planning, urban design, building conservation, architecture, or related fields is essential. Demonstrable experience across these areas is required.

Membership or eligibility for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute, the Institute of Historic Building Conservation, or another relevant professional body is desirable.

About you
You will have a different way of seeing and be at ease with change. You will recognise the strength and charisma of heritage assets and bring flair to design and planning. You will be able to engender enthusiasm and support for conservation and design, working collaboratively across multiple teams.

You will be digitally literate, committed to excellent customer service, flexible in your approach to work, and able to manage high workloads and demanding deadlines.

Your approach will be inclusive, holistic, and innovative, with the ability to think beyond detail to the bigger picture.

Qualifications
You will hold a degree or equivalent qualification in planning, urban design, building conservation, architecture, or a related discipline, or have equivalent demonstrable experience.
