WSP is at the forefront of delivering the next generation of electricity network infrastructure. As demand for cleaner, more resilient power systems continues to grow, we're expanding our Primary Substation capability and are looking for Engineers, Senior Engineers, Associates and Associate Directors to join us.
Working on nationally significant projects, including programmes supporting the Great Grid Upgrade, you'll contribute to the design and delivery of high-voltage substations that will help connect renewable generation, strengthen network resilience and support the UK's net zero ambitions.
Responsibilities include producing a comprehensive suite of design drawings for Grid and Primary substations; preparing technical specifications for electrical plant; providing associated electrical designs for substation upgrades and new substation projects from 11kV up to and including 132kV; producing substation design feasibility reports, cost estimates, layouts and general arrangements; and preparing plant specifications including transformers, switchgear and battery systems.
You will review designs produced by suppliers and clients to ensure technical compliance with current legislation and policies, ensure designs are delivered in accordance with contract requirements, and undertake the role of CDM Designer and/or Principal Designer for developed HV and EHV projects. Identifying and managing relevant Health and Safety risks and hazards, attending site meetings to support design or requirement changes during project build, and ensuring project design works align with programme, quality, and margin are key aspects of the role.
Additionally, you will actively develop external and internal client relationships and contribute your expertise in HV and EHV plant specification, design, load calculations and rating studies, including preparing specifications for substation equipment and evaluating plant accessories such as CTs, battery systems and terminations.
Experience
- Proven experience in HV and EHV substation design (both AIS & GIS), from 11kV up to and including 132kV
- Experience of small, medium and technically complex new substation, retrofit or network reinforcement projects
- Exposure to substation cable design and protection and control
- Experience producing design cost estimations
- Knowledge of engineering standards and technical policies for HV and EHV plant and substations, including earthing and electrical clearances
- Ability to interpret technical documentation relating to electrical substation design
- Ability to travel as per project needs
