Our Environmental & Sustainability Services (ESS) team is a growing network of professionals dedicated to innovative environmental and sustainability solutions across multiple sectors.
We are seeking a Principal Environmental and Sustainability Consultant to lead the environmental workstream for water resources planning projects. This role involves technical leadership, project delivery oversight, and client engagement primarily within the water sector. You will lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality environmental assessments, including Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA), Natural Capital Assessment, and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessment.
As we prepare for the AMP8 period, this position offers the opportunity to contribute to a dynamic portfolio of water resource projects, driving technical excellence and sustainable outcomes. The role is based in any UK office, with a preference for South East locations.
Experience
- Proven experience leading environmental assessments in the water sector or related fields
- Experience with strategic water planning documents such as Water Resource Management Plans, Regional Water Resource Plans, Drought Plans, and Drainage and Wastewater Management Plans
- Experience working in diverse, multi-disciplinary teams and leading delivery of environmental and sustainability outputs
- Client-facing experience with ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders
- Strong organisational, planning, and project management skills including budget management
- Ability to problem solve creatively and pursue continuous improvement

Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical subject
- Desirable: Master's degree in a relevant field
- Desirable: Chartered status with a professional institution such as CIWEM or ISEP (previously IEMA) or equivalent professional recognition
- Desirable: Significant experience in SEA, HRA, Natural Capital Assessment or related environmental assessment methodologies
