About the Role
The Global Centre for Clean Energy and Equitable Transportation Solutions (CLEETS) is seeking a highly motivated researcher with expertise in transport modelling and data analysis to join a multidisciplinary research team at the University of Birmingham. CLEETS is an international collaboration between leading UK and US universities focused on enabling a sustainable and equitable transition in energy and transport systems. The successful candidate will work closely with collaborators at Cardiff University and partner institutions in the USA.
The primary aim of this role is to advance understanding of the societal impacts of transport decarbonisation strategies and energy system transitions in urban regions in both the United States (Great Lakes) and the United Kingdom (South Wales and the West Midlands). The postholder will undertake travel demand analysis using attitudinal and stated preference data collected by the CLEETS team, focusing on transport users’ awareness of environmental impacts and how this influences their adoption of sustainable travel choices. The role also involves close engagement with a wide range of stakeholders to understand policy priorities at regional and national levels.
Key responsibilities include developing research objectives and proposals, contributing to funding bids, analysing qualitative and quantitative data on travel attitudes and perceptions related to electric mobility, autonomous mobility, and mobility hubs, disseminating research findings through seminars, conferences, and publications, supervising students, developing new models and methods, managing research administration, and contributing to enterprise, business development, and public engagement activities.
The role promotes equality and values diversity, fostering an inclusive working culture.
Experience
Proven background in transport modelling and data analysis with high-level analytical capability in travel behaviour and demand analysis. Experience in analysing qualitative and quantitative data related to travel attitudes and perceptions is essential. Ability to communicate complex information clearly and contribute to developing new models, techniques, or methods.
About you
You will be a motivated researcher with strong organisational skills, able to coordinate your work with others to avoid duplication. You demonstrate an understanding of broader management and administration processes and contribute effectively to research programme planning. You value equality, diversity, and inclusion and actively promote these principles in your work.
Qualifications
First degree in a relevant area of specialism and normally a higher degree or equivalent qualifications in disciplines such as Transport Engineering, Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Business Studies, or Behavioural Sciences. Fluency in relevant models, techniques, or methods is required. Candidates must provide a CV with publication list and a cover letter indicating their motivation for applying.
