About the Role
Guildford Borough Council is expanding its Countryside Team and offers an exciting opportunity to use your passion for the outdoors to enhance the quality of our countryside and contribute to the development of three newly opened sites. The Countryside Team manages over 800 hectares of diverse habitats including Chalk Downland, Heathlands, Woodlands, Local Nature Reserves, SSSI’s, and urban green spaces. This role involves carrying out countryside work operations, managing contractors, and engaging with the community. Most of your time will be spent on site, where no two days are the same. You will be responsible for the sensitive and appropriate management of the Council’s countryside estate, ensuring the long-term continuity of woodland, grassland, chalk downland, heathland, and other habitats and species. You will also promote and increase public, educational, and community use of these sites by supervising volunteer groups and running events and activities as directed. Additionally, you will organise the operational maintenance of the countryside sites to ensure they are maintained in accordance with management plans, Stewardship agreements, and user expectations.
Experience
Proven experience working in countryside and habitat management, including estate management, scrub clearance, tree felling, coppicing, fencing, and other conservation tasks.
About you
You will be physically fit and able to work outdoors in varying conditions. You must be able to work on your own initiative and communicate enthusiastically and effectively at all levels, including with volunteer groups, partner organisations, and contractors. A full driving licence is essential for this role.
Qualifications
National Certificate in Countryside Management or equivalent experience is required.
