About the Role
Manchester City Council is seeking an experienced and motivated Tree Officer to help manage and protect the city's diverse and valuable tree population. Reporting to the Senior Tree Officer, you will play a key role in delivering a safe, sustainable and resilient urban forest. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Manchester's environmental ambitions while helping to maintain and enhance the city's green infrastructure.

Key responsibilities include undertaking tree inspections, surveys and condition assessments across a wide range of locations such as highways, parks, river valleys, housing and open land. You will identify and specify arboricultural works in accordance with industry best practice and relevant legislation, provide advice on tree-related enquiries from residents, councillors, developers and other stakeholders, and investigate complaints, insurance claims and incidents involving trees.

Additional duties involve monitoring contractor performance to ensure works meet required specifications and quality standards, providing arboricultural advice on planning applications and development proposals, contributing to the delivery of Manchester's Tree Strategy and wider environmental objectives, and maintaining accurate records using GIS and tree management software, preferably Tree Plotter.

You will also assist with emergency responses relating to dangerous trees following severe weather events and other urgent situations.

This role is designated as Essential Car User, requiring a full valid driving licence and use of your own car for work, with an allowance provided. The position is full-time and permanent, with a pre-placement health assessment required.

Requirements

Experience
Practical experience within an arboricultural or tree management environment is essential. You should have in-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, industry standards and best practice guidance relating to trees. Experience using GIS and tree management systems is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to manage a varied workload independently are also necessary. A full, clean UK driving licence is essential.

About you
You are a knowledgeable and customer-focused arboriculture professional capable of making sound technical decisions and effectively managing competing priorities. You have a commitment to maintaining high standards of public safety and environmental stewardship, along with a desire for continued learning.

Qualifications
Applicants should hold a minimum Level 2 Certificate in Arboriculture (or equivalent qualification) with a commitment to progress to Level 4. Desirable qualifications include PTI Professional Tree Inspection – Lantra (or willingness to work towards this), City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate of Competence in Emergency Treework Planning, Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) Practitioner qualification, and City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award (CS30/31) in Chainsaw Maintenance and Felling Small Trees.
