About the Role
Tower Hamlets is seeking a committed and motivated Transport Coordinator to join Waste Services. This hands-on operational role supports the day-to-day running and management of the waste operational services fleet, ensuring compliance with the Council’s Operators Licence conditions. You will play a key role in shaping the future of fleet operations, directly impacting service quality and coordinating the introduction of innovative vehicles such as underground refuse storage collection vehicles and mechanical sweepers. Responsibilities include scheduling maintenance and repairs, monitoring safety standards, and maintaining detailed records of vehicle condition, history, and usage. You will collaborate closely with the Council’s corporate fleet management team and support the Fleet Compliance Officer to provide expert insight, ensuring the availability, safe and efficient use of the Waste Services’ fleet to deliver excellent service borough-wide.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a planned approach to removing operational vehicles from frontline duties for servicing, inspection, or repair in coordination with service managers.
- Manage fleet vehicle allocation to balance usage and address excessive use.
- Conduct regular vehicle inspections to identify damage and discuss maintenance and driver-related issues with service managers.
- Provide in-cab and classroom training for drivers at all levels, including non-LGV and LGV, on specialist equipment and driver assessments to ensure safe driving standards.
- Investigate accidents and dangerous occurrences.
- Check and review vehicle safety systems and supporting equipment such as on-board cameras, vehicle tracking, and data recording.
- Conduct random checks and regularly audit transport records.
- Maintain a vehicle washing programme.
- Oversee vehicle preparation for winter maintenance.
- Manage a parking system for fleet vehicles and drivers’ personal vehicles.

Experience
- Proven experience in a Transport Compliance or Fleet Management role, preferably within the waste industry.
- Understanding of UK transport regulations including driver hours, tachograph requirements, vehicle inspections, and safety standards.
- Knowledge of Waste Operations services and operational fleet availability and servicing requirements, ideally in a local government or public sector setting.

Qualifications
- Valid full LGV driving licence (Category C).
- Driving assessment qualification (Level 2 award).
