About the Role

We are looking for eight enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join our Water Resources Permitting teams. The successful candidates will help create a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment by assessing and determining applications for environmental licences. Key responsibilities include managing a busy caseload, assessing multiple applications simultaneously, delivering high-quality, risk-based permitting decisions to deadlines, proactively managing your workload, and developing excellent working relationships with customers.
Training and Development
You will receive full training, mentoring, and coaching to help you develop your technical skills and knowledge in assessing applications for water abstraction licences, understanding environmental sensitivities, making sound technical decisions within tight timeframes, and understanding environmental permitting legislation and policies.
About the Team
Our Permitting Teams play a vital role in protecting the environment and supporting sustainable economic growth. You’ll be part of a dedicated team of permitting officers based in either Nottingham or Ipswich, working within a supportive, hybrid working model, spending at least 20% of your time in the office. Incident response is a core part of life at the Environment Agency, and everyone is expected to undertake relevant training and contribute to incident response duties when required.

About you
We’re looking for people who are passionate about protecting the environment and who are comfortable making risk-based decisions. You should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, good organisational skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, attention to detail, and the ability to produce high-quality, accurate work. You should also be self-directed in learning alongside provided training and able to work under pressure.
Qualifications
You don’t need a degree or direct experience in water permitting — your potential matters!
