About the Role
Are you a skilled hydraulic modeller ready to make a real impact? At Natural Resources Wales (NRW), our Flood Risk Analysis team plays a vital role in protecting communities by producing and managing flood risk mapping and modelling evidence that underpins all flood risk management work. In this exciting role, you will build detailed hydraulic models to support capital schemes that improve understanding and provide evidence to reduce flood risk to vulnerable communities. You will review and appraise third-party models submitted in support of new developments in flood risk areas and enhance the Wales Flood Map, a key public resource regularly updated and accessed via our website. Your work will include capturing and analysing flood incident data to inform future modelling studies and improve understanding of flood mechanisms and dynamics. You will manage and maintain flood risk data sets and archives, ensuring the evidence base is complete, accurate, and accessible for future use. Advising stakeholders and partners on interpreting and applying data effectively will be a key part of your role.

You will be part of a collaborative, technically experienced team based in Buckley, delivering consistent services across the region. As a Category 1 responder, you will contribute to NRW's flood incident response duties, providing out-of-hours support on flood duty rotas, making a direct difference when it matters most.

Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.

Requirements

Experience
Proven experience in hydraulic modelling using industry standard software such as Flood Modeller Pro or TuFLOW. Experience in project management and delivery of flood risk modelling commissions. Ability to quality check Flood Consequence Assessments and provide technical advice. Experience in post-flood data collection and analysis is desirable.

About you
Strong communication skills with the ability to build working relationships across teams and represent NRW in public meetings. Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced colleagues. Commitment to health and safety responsibilities and equal opportunities. Willingness to participate in out-of-hours flood incident response duties. Enthusiastic about personal development and continuous learning. Welsh language skills are considered an asset; NRW supports staff to develop these skills if not already met at A1 level.

Qualifications
Relevant qualifications in hydraulic modelling, environmental science, engineering or related disciplines are expected. Commitment to ongoing professional development through personal development plans (Sgwrs).
