
Location
Central London, primarily at The Children's Country House at Sudbury, with potential support across the portfolio including Kedleston Hall and The Old Manor at Norbury.
Hours
Full Time - 37.5 hours per week, with occasional weekends, bank holidays and evenings as required.
Salary
£27,612 per annum
About the Role
As a Gardener for the National Trust, you will be a hands-on member of the garden team responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and highest standards of horticulture at The Children's Country House at Sudbury. You will help conserve and develop one of the most extensive plant collections in Europe, ensuring the Gardens and Parkland remain in excellent condition for visitors. Your duties will include routine tasks such as weeding, pruning, mulching, and operating machinery like hedge cutters, leaf blowers, lawnmowers, and tractors. You may also be involved in propagation, plant preparation for sale, tree safety work, garden design, restoration, recycling, and waste management.
You will lead and support volunteers and the wider gardening team, taking responsibility for parts of the role and training new staff and volunteers. The role involves physical work in all weather conditions and requires the safe use of a wide variety of machinery and equipment, with training provided.

Experience
- Practical horticultural experience, including working with hard landscaping.
- Experience operating machinery such as tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, with some knowledge of maintenance.
- Experience leading or supporting teams, including volunteers, is desirable.

- Enthusiastic and hands-on gardener with a strong knowledge of plants and great attention to detail.
- Able to manage a demanding outdoor role and work effectively in all weather conditions.
- Good interpersonal skills, confident in working within a team, with volunteers, or independently.
- Reliable, able to plan, keep to time, and meet deadlines.
- Holds a full driving licence.

- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Permanent full-time availability (37.5 hours per week).
