About the Role
Hertfordshire County Council’s Recycling Centre service team is seeking self-motivated individuals to help increase recycling rates and divert waste from landfill across Hertfordshire. Current openings include Recycling Operative roles in St Albans and Flexi Operative roles in Stevenage, Waterdale, and Berkhamsted.

All necessary training is provided, including First Aid, Fire Marshall, Manual Handling, and Plant operation. There are opportunities for progression within the team.

Key duties include:
- Assisting service users to correctly dispose of waste
- Checking permits for vans and trailers and monitoring waste types
- Ensuring waste streams remain uncontaminated
- Maintaining a clean and tidy work environment
- Identifying ways to improve customer service and recycling rates
- Operating JCBs and compactors for waste compaction (training provided)

Flexi Operatives will be based at a designated recycling site but must be flexible to provide cover at other Council sites across Hertfordshire. Duties involve safe sorting and handling of recyclable materials, site cleanliness, and assisting with equipment operation in compliance with health, safety, and environmental legislation and Council procedures.

This role requires flexibility in working hours and locations. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential, with approved mileage expenses reimbursed according to Council policy.

Experience
Previous experience in customer service or waste management is advantageous but not essential. Ability to work under sustained physical effort and in all weather conditions is beneficial.

You remain calm under pressure and can advise residents on waste disposal safely and effectively. Flexibility to work across multiple sites and hours is required for Flexi Operative roles.

A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are mandatory for Flexi Operative applicants.

No formal qualifications are required. All relevant training will be provided as part of the role.
