About the Role
We are seeking a technically driven, detail-oriented RTU Development Engineer to lead the development, deployment, and lifecycle management of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) applications critical to Thames Water’s Operational Technology (OT) landscape. You will work collaboratively with engineering teams, operational stakeholders, system integrators, and suppliers to design, configure, optimise, and support standardised RTU architectures that enable secure, resilient, and scalable telemetry and automation systems across thousands of distributed assets within Thames Water’s clean and wastewater networks.

Your responsibilities will include leading RTU application development and lifecycle management, executing the full software development lifecycle, writing clean and testable code using IEC 61131 languages, validating firmware and communication protocols, and supporting RTU architecture and integration frameworks. You will also provide technical input to capital delivery and OT project teams, collaborate with system integrators and vendors, and offer second-tier technical support and fault diagnostics.

Additionally, you will engage with stakeholders and vendors to translate business requirements into RTU technical specifications, manage RTU documentation, standards, and training content, and ensure RTU systems comply with quality, safety, and cybersecurity standards. You will contribute to tender evaluations and the technical assessment of new RTU products, supporting the ongoing resilience and security of Thames Water’s OT environment.

Requirements

Experience
- Proven experience in RTU programming, configuration, and lifecycle management.
- Demonstrable background in RTU system deployment and maintenance within operational environments.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and fault resolution skills.
- Ability to balance competing priorities and make technical decisions in fast-paced settings.
- Experience working with SCADA and OT systems in utilities or similar industries.

About you
Technically proficient and detail-oriented individual who thrives in collaborative and fast-paced environments. You are capable of managing multiple priorities and communicating complex technical content in clear, business-relevant language. A commitment to quality, security, and continuous improvement is essential. You should be adaptable and motivated to contribute to critical infrastructure resilience.

Qualifications
- HND or equivalent qualification in a technical discipline such as Electrical, Control Systems, or Automation.
- Proficiency with RTU and SCADA platforms including Serck, Schneider, Brodersen, Rockwell, Xylem, ClearSCADA, Wonderware, and FT View.
- Programming skills in IEC 61131-3 languages (LD, FBD, SFC, ST, IL) and structured industrial software development.
- Strong understanding of telemetry protocols such as DNP3, WITS DNP3, Modbus, and MQTT.
- Familiarity with Windows OS, virtualisation, and cyber-secure network architectures (IP, VPN, LAN/WAN).
- Experience with relational databases and historian platforms (e.g., Oracle, SQL, PI, Wonderware Historian).
- Excellent documentation and technical report writing skills.
- Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Experience & Skills
- Experience in customer relationship management.
- Knowledge of OT systems in water, utilities, or infrastructure sectors.
- Understanding of OT system methodologies, architectures, and industry standards.
- Awareness of cyber-physical systems and their role in critical infrastructure resilience.
- Experience in the operational water industry or OT system delivery.
