About the Role
We are seeking a technically driven, detail-oriented RTU Development Engineer to join Thames Water’s Operational Technology (OT) team. In this role, you will lead the development, deployment, and lifecycle management of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) applications critical to Thames Water’s clean and wastewater networks. You will design, configure, optimise, and support standardised RTU architectures to enable secure, resilient, and scalable telemetry and automation systems across thousands of distributed assets.

Your responsibilities will include leading RTU application development and lifecycle management, executing the full software development lifecycle, writing clean and testable code using IEC 61131 languages, validating firmware and communication protocols, and supporting RTU architecture and integration frameworks. You will collaborate closely with engineering teams, operational stakeholders, system integrators, and suppliers to deploy and optimise RTU solutions.

Additional duties include providing second-tier technical support and fault diagnostics, translating business requirements into technical specifications, managing RTU documentation and training content, and ensuring RTU systems comply with quality, safety, and cybersecurity standards. You will also contribute to tender evaluations and the technical assessment of new RTU products.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where your expertise will directly impact the operational efficiency and resilience of Thames Water’s infrastructure.

Requirements

Experience
- Proven experience in RTU programming, configuration, and lifecycle management.
- Demonstrable experience deploying and maintaining RTU systems in operational environments.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and fault resolution skills.
- Ability to balance competing priorities and make technical decisions in fast-paced settings.
- Experience working with SCADA and OT systems within utilities or similar industries.

About you
- Detail-oriented and technically driven individual who thrives in collaborative environments.
- Strong communicator able to translate technical content into business-relevant language.
- Committed to quality, safety, and compliance in operational technology.
- Able to manage conflicting priorities and technical project demands effectively.
- Enthusiastic about contributing to critical infrastructure resilience and cyber-physical systems.

Qualifications
- HND or equivalent qualification in a technical discipline such as Electrical, Control Systems, or Automation.
- Proficiency with RTU and SCADA platforms including Serck, Schneider, Brodersen, Rockwell, Xylem, ClearSCADA, Wonderware, and FT View.
- Programming knowledge of IEC 61131-3 languages (LD, FBD, SFC, ST, IL) and structured industrial software development.
- Strong understanding of telemetry protocols such as DNP3, WITS DNP3, Modbus, and MQTT.
- Familiarity with Windows OS, virtualisation, and cyber-secure network architectures (IP, VPN, LAN/WAN).
- Experience with relational databases and historian platforms (e.g. Oracle, SQL, PI, Wonderware Historian).
- Excellent documentation and technical report writing skills.
- Full UK driving licence.

Desirable
- Experience in customer relationship management.
- Knowledge of OT systems in water, utilities, or infrastructure sectors.
- Working knowledge of OT system methodologies, architectures, and industry standards.
- Awareness of cyber-physical systems and their role in critical infrastructure resilience.
- Experience in the operational water industry or OT system delivery.
