About the Role
We are seeking a technically driven, detail-oriented RTU Development Engineer to join Thames Water’s Operational Technology (OT) team. In this role, you will lead the development, deployment, and lifecycle management of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) applications critical to our clean and wastewater networks. You will design, configure, optimise, and support standardised RTU architectures to enable secure, resilient, and scalable telemetry and automation systems across thousands of distributed assets.
Your responsibilities will include leading RTU application development and lifecycle management, executing the full software development lifecycle, writing clean and testable code using IEC 61131 languages, validating firmware and communication protocols, and supporting RTU architecture and integration frameworks. You will collaborate closely with engineering teams, operational stakeholders, system integrators, and suppliers to ensure successful RTU solution deployment and optimisation.
Additionally, you will provide second-tier technical support and fault diagnostics, translate business requirements into technical specifications, manage vendor relationships, and ensure RTU systems comply with quality, safety, and cybersecurity standards. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to internal tender evaluations and the technical assessment of new RTU products, supporting Thames Water’s commitment to operational excellence and infrastructure resilience.
Experience
- Proven experience in RTU programming, configuration, and lifecycle management.
- Demonstrable experience in RTU system deployment and maintenance within operational environments.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and fault resolution skills.
- Ability to balance competing priorities and make technical decisions in fast-paced settings.
- Experience working with SCADA and OT systems in utilities or similar industries.
About you
Technically proficient and detail-oriented individual who thrives in collaborative, fast-paced environments. You are able to communicate complex technical content in clear, business-relevant language and manage conflicting priorities effectively. A commitment to quality, safety, and compliance is essential, along with a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- HND or equivalent qualification in a technical discipline such as Electrical, Control Systems, or Automation.
- Proficiency with RTU and SCADA platforms including Serck, Schneider, Brodersen, Rockwell, Xylem, ClearSCADA, Wonderware, and FT View.
- Programming knowledge of IEC 61131-3 languages (LD, FBD, SFC, ST, IL) and structured industrial software development.
- Strong understanding of telemetry protocols such as DNP3, WITS DNP3, Modbus, and MQTT.
- Familiarity with Windows OS, virtualisation, and cyber-secure network architectures (IP, VPN, LAN/WAN).
- Experience with relational databases and historian platforms (e.g. Oracle, SQL, PI, Wonderware Historian).
- Excellent documentation and technical report writing skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Experience & Skills
- Experience in customer relationship management.
- Knowledge of OT systems in water, utilities, or infrastructure sectors.
- Understanding of OT system methodologies, architectures, and industry standards.
- Awareness of cyber-physical systems and their role in critical infrastructure resilience.
- Experience in the operational water industry or OT system delivery.
