About the Role
We are seeking a technically driven, detail-oriented RTU Development Engineer to join Thames Water’s Operational Technology (OT) team. In this role, you will lead the development, deployment, and lifecycle management of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) applications critical to Thames Water’s clean and wastewater networks. You will design, configure, optimise, and support standardised RTU architectures to enable secure, resilient, and scalable telemetry and automation systems across thousands of distributed assets.
Your responsibilities will include leading the design, build, and configuration of RTU application solutions, developing and maintaining firmware libraries and templates, managing upgrade processes, and overseeing release management and conformance testing. You will execute the full software development lifecycle, write clean and testable code using IEC 61131 languages, validate firmware and communication protocols, and support RTU architecture and integration frameworks.
You will collaborate closely with internal capital delivery and OT project teams, system integrators, and vendors to deploy and optimise RTU solutions, provide second-tier technical support and fault diagnostics, and translate business requirements into technical specifications. Additionally, you will ensure RTU systems are robust, secure, and compliant with industry and internal standards, contributing to cybersecurity measures and technical assessments of new RTU products.
This role offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where your technical expertise will directly impact the reliability and efficiency of Thames Water’s operational technology landscape.
Experience
- Proven experience in RTU programming, configuration, and lifecycle management.
- Demonstrable experience in RTU system deployment and maintenance within operational environments.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and fault resolution skills.
- Ability to balance competing priorities and make technical decisions in fast-paced settings.
- Experience working with SCADA and OT systems in utilities or similar industries.
About you
- Technically driven and detail-oriented individual who thrives in collaborative environments.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical content into business-relevant language.
- Ability to manage conflicting priorities and technical project demands.
- Commitment to quality, safety, and compliance.
- Full UK driving licence.
Qualifications
- HND or equivalent qualification in a technical discipline such as Electrical, Control Systems, or Automation.
- Proficiency with RTU and SCADA platforms including Serck, Schneider, Brodersen, Rockwell, Xylem, ClearSCADA, Wonderware, and FT View.
- Programming knowledge of IEC 61131-3 languages (LD, FBD, SFC, ST, IL) and structured industrial software development.
- Strong understanding of telemetry protocols such as DNP3, WITS DNP3, Modbus, and MQTT.
- Familiarity with Windows OS, virtualisation, and cyber-secure network architectures (IP, VPN, LAN/WAN).
- Experience with relational databases and historian platforms (e.g. Oracle, SQL, PI, Wonderware Historian).
- Excellent documentation and technical report writing skills.
Desirable Experience & Skills
- Experience in customer relationship management.
- Strong understanding of OT in water, utilities, or infrastructure sectors.
- Knowledge of OT system methodologies, architectures, and industry standards.
- Awareness of cyber-physical systems and their role in critical infrastructure resilience.
- Experience in the operational water industry or OT system delivery.
