About the Role
We are seeking a technically driven, detail-oriented RTU Development Engineer to join Thames Water. In this role, you will collaborate with engineering teams, operational stakeholders, system integrators, and suppliers to lead the development, deployment, and lifecycle management of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) applications critical to Thames Water’s Operational Technology (OT) landscape. You will manage the full lifecycle of RTU application solutions across clean and wastewater networks, including design, configuration, optimisation, and support of standardised RTU architectures to enable secure, resilient, and scalable telemetry and automation systems across thousands of distributed assets.

Key responsibilities include:

- Leading the design, build, and configuration of standardised RTU application solutions
- Developing and maintaining RTU firmware libraries, templates, and configurations
- Defining and managing RTU upgrade processes to ensure maintainability and security
- Overseeing RTU release management and conformance testing
- Executing the full software development lifecycle for RTU applications
- Writing clean, testable code using IEC 61131 languages and related platforms
- Validating firmware and communication protocols through rigorous testing
- Supporting the development of RTU architecture and integration frameworks
- Providing technical input to internal capital delivery and OT project teams
- Collaborating with system integrators and vendors to deploy and optimise RTU solutions
- Offering second-tier technical support and fault diagnostics for RTU installations
- Translating business and operational requirements into RTU technical specifications
- Liaising with internal stakeholders to align RTU functionality with operational needs
- Coordinating with RTU vendors to ensure solution compatibility and future-readiness
- Managing RTU-specific documentation, standards, and training content
- Ensuring RTU systems are robust, secure, and compliant with industry and internal standards
- Supporting RTU addressing strategies and cybersecurity measures
- Contributing to tender evaluations and technical assessments of new RTU products

Requirements

Experience
- Proven experience in RTU programming, configuration, and lifecycle management
- Demonstrable experience in RTU system deployment and maintenance in operational environments
- Strong technical troubleshooting and fault resolution skills
- Ability to balance competing priorities and make technical decisions in fast-paced environments
- Experience working with SCADA and OT systems in utilities or similar industries

Qualifications
- HND or equivalent qualification in a technical discipline such as Electrical, Control Systems, or Automation
- Proficiency in RTU and SCADA platforms including Serck, Schneider, Brodersen, Rockwell, Xylem, ClearSCADA, Wonderware, and FT View
- Programming knowledge of IEC 61131-3 languages (LD, FBD, SFC, ST, IL) and structured industrial software development
- Strong understanding of telemetry protocols such as DNP3, WITS DNP3, Modbus, and MQTT
- Familiarity with Windows OS, virtualisation, and cyber-secure network architectures (IP, VPN, LAN/WAN)
- Experience with relational databases and historian platforms (e.g. Oracle, SQL, PI, Wonderware Historian)
- Excellent documentation and technical report writing skills

Desirable Experience & Skills
- Experience in customer relationship management
- Strong understanding of OT in water, utilities, or infrastructure sectors
- Knowledge of OT system methodologies, architectures, and industry standards
- Awareness of cyber-physical systems and their role in critical infrastructure resilience
- Experience in the operational water industry or OT system delivery
