About the Role
Stantec's Environmental Services group is a market leader supporting clients in the environmental, geotechnical, and water sectors across the UK and Ireland. Due to exciting growth plans and increased workload in Northern Ireland, we are seeking a Senior Hydrologist / Hydraulic Modeller to join our friendly team in Belfast. You will be part of a wider Water Environment Team comprising over 80 Hydrologists, Hydrogeologists, Water Resources Planners, and Water Quality Scientists.

Your projects will focus on enhancing the resilience of public water supplies and reducing the impact of wastewater treatment infrastructure on the water environment. Opportunities include flood risk modelling, sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) modelling, and nature-based solutions. Typical work will cover flood hydrology and hydraulic modelling studies incorporating climate change impacts, Flood Risk Assessments for planning applications, low flow assessments, water systems modelling for drought supply availability, and the design and testing of nature-based solutions to improve flooding and water quality.

As a Senior Hydrologist / Hydraulic Modeller, you will be responsible for delivering projects related to water resource management, hydrological and hydraulic modelling, drainage and flood mitigation, and climate impact assessments. You will manage projects, maintain client relationships, assist in business development, and provide technical guidance, support, and training to junior colleagues, including mentoring and development.

Requirements

Experience
- Several years' experience in hydrology, flood risk, and/or drainage, preferably within a consultancy environment
- Significant technical experience in Flood Risk Assessments, hydraulic modelling using 1D-2D modelling packages (e.g. Flood Modeller-TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, MIKE FLOOD, InfoWorks ICM)
- Experience with fluvial, pluvial, and tidal hydraulic modelling and flood protection system design
- Knowledge of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) principles and design (e.g. WinDes, MicroDrainage, Causeway Flow)
- Hydrological modelling using FEH methods, ReFH2, WINFAP
- Working with hydrometric data, gauging station analysis, and rainfall-runoff model calibration
- Low flow and drought assessments
- Environmental Impact Assessments related to water resources, drainage, flood risk, and Water Framework Directive assessments
- Familiarity with GIS software (QGIS/ArcGIS), coding (e.g. Python), and database management is advantageous
- Chartered or near Chartership status with a relevant professional body

- Chartered status or working towards Chartership with a relevant professional institution

Desirable Additional Experience
- Water quality assessments and modelling including sediment transport
- Quarry or mining-specific Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) and Flood Consequence Assessments (FCAs)
- River restoration studies such as weir removal impact assessments
- Water resources assessments and integrated catchment management
- Climate change impact assessment and adaptation planning
