About the Role
Do you want to make a long-term difference to the people and environment of Wales? Are you passionate about protecting rare species? Join our Wales-wide Protected Species Team within the Development Planning Advice Service. You will provide expert advice on the potential impacts of a broad range of proposals on protected species, focusing on species licence applications and development planning advice. Your work will directly contribute to the conservation of some of Wales’ most iconic and endangered species during this nature emergency.
As a Species Adviser, you will provide technical expertise and guidance on legally protected species including bats (all species), great crested newt, dormice, otters, natterjack toad, sand lizard, red squirrel, pine marten, and water voles. You will work closely with internal and external customers to deliver robust, evidence-based advice within agreed deadlines.
Key responsibilities include providing technical advice to Local Development Plans and sub-regional strategies, supporting licence application processes, contributing to appeals and inquiries, delivering the Domestic Advice Service, supporting designated site management, and assisting Police investigations into Protected Species offences. You will also contribute to surveillance and monitoring programmes and maintain auditable records to ensure all legal and procedural requirements are met.
Natural Resources Wales supports flexible working and is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Interviews will be held in person with details confirmed in advance.
