About the Role
Join AECOM’s established and expanding Nuclear team as an Associate Nuclear Waste Consultant, taking a key leadership role in delivering a diverse portfolio of international and UK-based projects. You will manage and support multi-disciplinary projects across all stages of the project lifecycle, from early client consultancy and strategic advisory support through to comprehensive turn-key solutions and project delivery. Your responsibilities will include technical delivery, client engagement, project management, bid support, and ensuring adherence to AECOM’s standards for quality, safety, and environmental care.

You will support business growth, maintain strong client relationships, and contribute to the success of our nuclear waste and decommissioning portfolio. This role requires independent expertise and leadership across multi-disciplinary teams to deliver successful outcomes. Projects range from consultancy support to full project delivery at any lifecycle stage.

Typical activities include managing complex nuclear waste management projects, providing technical leadership in waste characterisation, treatment, storage, and disposal, developing and implementing waste management strategies compliant with regulatory requirements, conducting technical assessments and risk evaluations, acting as a key client contact, preparing technical reports and presentations, advising on regulatory compliance and strategic planning, supporting business development, and mentoring junior staff.

Requirements

Experience
- Extensive relevant experience in radioactive waste management within regulated and quality-assured environments
- Experience working on UK nuclear licensed sites or strong knowledge of UK Site Licence Companies
- Experience operating waste management facilities or supporting related studies
- Proven track record in delivering consultancy commissions and project management activities
- Supporting nuclear decommissioning projects or defining strategic decommissioning approaches
- Facilitating optioneering workshops and stakeholder engagement
- Supporting regulator engagement, licensing, and environmental permitting activities
- Competency in waste management studies, including strategy development, integrated waste strategies, and radioactive waste inventory development
- Experience in environmental studies such as Best Available Technique (BAT) assessments and Environmental Aspects identification

Qualifications
- Minimum HNC qualification, preferably supported by a relevant science or engineering degree
- Strong technical knowledge and leadership capability
- Competency in technical governance, project management, health and safety responsibilities, document review and approval, financial and technical project management, workload management, cost control, programme management, and reporting
- Experience liaising with clients, suppliers, and contractors
- Supporting recruitment and business growth activities

Waste Management Experience
- Solid, liquid, and gaseous waste management
- Waste strategy development, compliance, treatment, storage, transport, disposal, inventory, and characterisation

Environmental Experience
- Best Available Techniques (BAT) or Best Practicable Means (BPM)
- Environmental Aspects identification
- Environmental Safety Cases
