About the Role
The Environment and Sustainability Manager plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards around Health, Safety, and Environmental matters, which are key objectives within BT's corporate strategy. This position is pivotal in maintaining BT's ISO14001 accreditation, underpinning environmental compliance, and supporting contracts worth over £3 billion. The role focuses on the effective management of BT's Environmental Management System (EMS), with particular emphasis on Waste Management and the Natural Environment.
The postholder will lead cross-functional coordination, drive key forums and working groups, and manage internal audit actions, including the closure of major non-conformances. Additionally, this role supports BT's Group HSE policy and broader ESG initiatives, including biodiversity and sustainability programmes. This is a fixed term contract for 12 months.
Key responsibilities include serving as Site Aspect Lead for BT's EMS, overseeing Waste Management and Natural Environment sub-aspects; maintaining ISO14001 accreditation and ensuring ongoing compliance with environmental legislation such as Simpler Recycling and the Deposit Return Scheme; leading and coordinating cross-functional teams and working groups including the Site Aspect Working Group, Waste CIP, and EWSPR; managing internal audit actions and closing non-conformances; supporting delivery of BT's Group HSE policy and ESG initiatives; providing specialist advice on environmental risks, compliance, and best practice; monitoring and reporting on key performance indicators, audit actions, and compliance status; developing and delivering communications, training, and guidance to internal and external stakeholders; ensuring all relevant policies, procedures, and processes are up to date and compliant with statutory and business requirements; and supporting the development and implementation of environmental projects and initiatives such as waste management and protected species guidance.

Experience
- Proven experience in environmental management, ideally within a large, multi-site organisation.
- Experience in developing and delivering training, guidance, and communications.
- Experience in developing and implementing environmental projects to deliver continual improvements.
- Ability to provide specialist advice proactively and on request.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing complex projects.
- Excellent communication, research, and negotiation skills.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills with ability to engage effectively at all levels.
- Good understanding and application of regulatory and assurance frameworks including ISO 14001 and 5001.
- Strong knowledge of environmental legislation and compliance frameworks.
- Ability to analyse data, identify trends, and drive continual improvement.

Qualifications
- Ideally hold a degree in Environmental Science or a related field.
- ISEP practitioner (formerly IEMA) or equivalent qualification is desirable.
