About the Role
The AECOM Nuclear Waste Team currently have a Graduate Waste Consultant role available in our Manchester office starting June 2027 onwards. Our team provides consultancy to the nuclear industry, supporting decommissioning, radioactive waste management, and environmental consultancy for clients in the UK and internationally. Projects range from new nuclear build design stages through to decommissioning and environmental site restoration. Key activities include operational support to UK nuclear sites, global radioactive waste management consultancy, early-stage development of the Deep Geological Repository, review and development of waste storage and disposal facilities, and support to multidisciplinary design teams on defence projects.
As a Graduate Waste Consultant, you will be paired with an experienced engineer who will mentor you through your initial career stages while working on live projects. Typical responsibilities include preparation of waste inventories, literature reviews of emerging radioactive waste technologies, Best Available Techniques / Best Practical Means determinations, environmental aspects assessments, reviewing options for decommissioning and radioactive waste management optimisation, and preparation of supporting documentation. You will develop a strong understanding of this highly regulated industry, including Nuclear Safety Cases, nuclear site permits and licences, and liaise with project teams, design engineers, and environmental specialists.

Experience
Graduates commencing their careers with AECOM are supported through mentoring and on-the-job learning. No prior professional experience is required, but enthusiasm, ambition, and a willingness to learn are essential.
About you
Enthusiastic, hard-working, technically proficient, and driven. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Basic computer skills (Word, Excel) are required. Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. Preferably holds a full UK driving licence or equivalent. Able to meet the requirements for UK security clearance.
Qualifications
Science-based honours degree with a minimum 2:1 (or equivalent) from an accredited university. Preferably with final year project or modules related to the nuclear industry, ideally associated with radioactive waste management or decommissioning practices, though this is not essential. Must have the permanent right to work in the UK and be able to meet Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and security clearance requirements.
