About the Role
Join AECOM’s dynamic and rapidly growing Water Business Line as a Principal Flood Modeller, working at the heart of one of the UK’s most ambitious northern engineering hubs. You will play a senior technical role delivering high-quality flood modelling and hydrology projects across the UK and beyond. Your expertise will guide junior staff and help develop innovative flood risk management solutions for local authorities, water companies, and public and private sector clients.
Key responsibilities include developing and checking hydraulic models using industry-standard software such as Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, Mike 11, Mike 21, HEC-RAS, and ICM to support Flood Alleviation Schemes, Flood Risk Assessments, and reservoir flood studies. You will also develop water quality models (physico-chemical, biological, bacterial, or chemical) using tools like MIKE, Delft3D, SIMCAT, and ICM.
You will conceptualise and scope modelling approaches, undertake hydrological assessments using Flood Estimation Handbook, ReFH2, and WINFAP, and lead tenders from innovative projects to multimillion-pound frameworks. Mentoring junior staff, building client relationships, and staying current with legislation and guidelines are essential aspects of this role. You will work closely with engineers and technical specialists to deliver fluvial, coastal, surface water, and drainage flood risk management projects.

Experience
- Significant experience in hydraulic and water quality modelling software such as Mike, ICM, SIMCAT, Flood Modeller, and/or TUFLOW
- Demonstrable knowledge of Environment Agency requirements for flood risk assessments
- Experience in hydrological assessments using Flood Estimation Handbook, ReFH2, WINFAP
- Practical knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, Anaconda, or Ruby is advantageous

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or a relevant discipline
- Obtained or near to obtaining professional qualification with CIWEM or similar professional body
- Basic understanding of physico-chemical water quality and associated regulatory standards for fresh waters
