About the Role
Masdar, a global clean energy leader established in 2006, is seeking a Grid Manager to support the Senior Grid Manager in delivering the end-to-end grid connection process for the UK Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) portfolio, with additional support to global offshore wind projects as required. This role involves managing grid connection applications, Grid Connection Offers, coordinating technical studies, and ensuring compliance with G99 and Grid Code requirements. The Grid Manager will collaborate with internal teams including development, construction, and procurement, as well as external stakeholders such as DNOs, Transmission Owners (TOs), NGESO, Ofgem, and technical consultants.
The role offers hands-on experience across grid connection contracts, power system studies, and regulatory engagement, contributing to the successful delivery of strategic energy infrastructure projects.
BESS Grid Connection Management:
- Support BESS projects from early development by providing grid-related expertise
- Analyse connection options, costs, and programme impacts, advising on technical and commercial implications
- Review connection offers, identify reinforcement schemes, and project-specific requirements
- Review curtailment studies and provide grid and power system insights to support commercial business case development
- Maintain clear communication across stakeholders to ensure grid risks and opportunities are well understood
Construction:
- Work closely with the construction team on electrical system design and grid integration
- Ensure power system design complies with grid requirements and connection agreements
- Clarify requirements to contractors and internal teams
- Review grid compliance study reports and test results
- Manage interface with the grid and oversee power system data and modelling of BESS assets
- Manage contractors and power system consultants to deliver timely, quality reports
- Liaise with DNO/TO/NGESO regarding grid compliance processes
Industry Engagement:
- Participate in grid-related industry forums, working groups, and consultations to contribute ideas and represent Masdar’s interests
Strategic Grid Planning & Policy Monitoring:
- Support tracking and interpretation of key policy and regulatory developments such as Grid Connection Reform and Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA)
- Assist in monitoring changes to transmission planning methodologies and strategic frameworks including tCSNP, SSEP, FES, and CP2030 to inform project development and stakeholder engagement
Offshore Wind Grid Support:
- Engage and maintain relationships with partners’ counterparts
- Support the wider Offshore team in Due Diligence activities
- Assist JV partners with grid connection processes from initial assessment to final agreement
Manage Sub-contractors, Vendors and Suppliers:
- Support and manage external consultants for grid-related work
- Develop and maintain a network of stakeholders and explore collaborations
Experience
- 5 to 7 years in power generation, distribution, or transmission industry
- Proven experience completing Grid Connection and Compliance for renewable energy assets
- Strong management and commercial understanding of the UK Grid market, especially DNO connections
- Experience in development and execution of large-scale infrastructure projects
About you
- In-depth knowledge of grid connection processes at distribution and transmission voltages for BESS and renewable energy sectors
- Solid understanding of UK Distribution & Transmission System regulations, stakeholders, and processes
- Proficient in power system analysis and familiar with tools for rating and performance studies
- Experience performing studies using RMS and EMT tools including Load Flow, short circuit, harmonic, flicker, insulation coordination, and G99/Grid Code compliance
- Ability to review power system analysis reports and test results to identify modelling and control system issues
- Familiarity with various BESS OEMs and BOP contractors and their capabilities
- Proactive self-starter committed to safety
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, diverse environment
- Advanced project management and negotiation skills to influence decision makers
- Contract administration and legal skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field preferred
