About the Role
As a Highways Planning Officer, you will play a key role in maintaining Westminster’s status as one of the world’s greenest cities. You will be responsible for assessing highway, traffic, parking, and other transportation issues relating to planning applications and development proposals. Acting as a source of expert guidance and advice on new legislation, highway planning, and waste storage, you will work collaboratively with colleagues and partner agencies to build climate resilience in a dense urban environment. Your role will involve negotiating with property developers and external organisations, as well as helping to secure funding for improvements to highways, traffic, and environmental schemes through sponsorship. This position offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development and sustainability of Westminster’s highway network within a world-class city.
Experience
An established professional with engineering or transport planning experience, you will have good knowledge of the powers of highway and planning authorities. You will also be familiar with the following legislation:
- Town & Country Planning Act
- The Refuse Disposal Amenity Act 1978
- Road Traffic Act 1984
About you
You are a natural communicator with excellent organisational, time management, and planning skills. Your written communication skills are strong, and you are confident drafting and contributing to concise, high-quality reports, briefing notes, and responses to Freedom of Information requests, complaints, and enquiries. You are adept at balancing competing priorities and take a meticulous, thorough approach to your work. You will be encouraged to develop and take ownership of new ideas and lead exciting changes to the Westminster highway network. Qualifications
Relevant qualifications in engineering, transport planning, or related fields are expected to support your professional experience.
