Instrumentation, Control & Automation Technician


Location
Brixton (SW2 1SB) or Merton Abbey (Colliers Wood, SW19 2EB), South London region. This is a mobile role covering various Water Treatment Works around Brixton, Streatham, Croydon areas and the Thames Water Ring Main.
Hours
38 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7:30 am – 3:36 pm plus standby and overtime opportunities, increasing earning potential by approximately £8,000-£10,000 per annum.
Salary
Up to £57,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience.
About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for an Instrumentation, Control & Automation (ICA) Technician to join our Water Production Operations Team. This vital role involves installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of water production assets such as level instrumentation, flow meters, and turbidity monitors (TVMs). You will work with SCADA systems, PLCs, and process control networks, ensuring water quality compliance, safety, and operational efficiency both during and outside normal hours.
You will liaise with and supervise contractors and suppliers, investigate asset failures, and implement repairs quickly to avoid interruptions to water supply. Providing specialist technical advice and training support for apprentices will also be part of your responsibilities. Additionally, you will maintain the Control & Instrumentation assets across the Thames Water ring main.
All necessary PPE, tools, a company van, and fuel are provided.
Experience
- Practical understanding of operational plant and control systems.
- Experience with calibration and maintenance of front-line instrumentation.
- Knowledge of relay logic and PLCs (Rockwell & Allen Bradley), including management and programming.
- Ability to read and fault-find from circuit diagrams.
- Previous experience with inverter drives is desirable.
- Understanding of Wonderware and ClearSCADA is advantageous.
- Proven problem-solving skills and ability to implement or escalate solutions.
- Experience providing technical expertise to internal and external staff and contractors.

Qualifications
- Ideally qualified to HNC level or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in instrumentation, control and automation discipline.
- Preferably holds an 18th Edition (BS7671) qualification.
