About the Role
Join GE Vernova and be part of a winning team driving the Green Energy transition. As a Lead Control Automation Hardware Engineer, you will design and develop robust, standards-compliant substation control and protection panels for HVDC and high-voltage applications. Your responsibilities will include selecting key hardware components such as CTs/VTs, IEDs, MCBs, power supplies, switches, and GPS clocks, while applying your expertise in IEC 61850 protocols including Sampled Values (SV), PRP, and HSR for substation communication architectures. You will prepare and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, BOMs, and panel layouts, as well as contribute to mechanical design aspects including enclosure arrangement, ventilation, and maintainability. Ensuring compliance with IEC and IEEE standards, you will support network communication system design, EMC/EMI considerations, and interface design for trip circuits, measurement circuits, interlocking, and signal acquisition. You will participate in design reviews, FAT, troubleshooting, and commissioning support, working closely with cross-functional teams across engineering, manufacturing, testing, and site operations. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to continuous improvement of standard designs and engineering practices within a dynamic, international environment focused on accelerating the energy transition and integrating renewables onto the grid.

Requirements

Experience
- Significant experience in substation panel design, protection hardware selection, and HVDC control systems.
- Strong knowledge of IEC/IEEE standards, IEC 61850 including Sampled Values (SV), PRP, HSR, and digital substation hardware architecture.
- Proven ability to select and specify CTs/VTs, protection IEDs, MCBs, power supplies, switches, GPS clocks, and related hardware.
- Experience with electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, BOMs, and panel layout drawings.
- Familiarity with mechanical panel design including enclosure arrangement, mounting, ventilation, and maintainability.
- Experience in panel type testing, root cause analysis, DFMEA, and managing change processes.
- Knowledge of EMC/EMI requirements, grounding, shielding, and panel segregation.
- Experience supporting FAT, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
- Experience with network communication systems, managed switches, redundant architectures, and industrial cybersecurity standards (e.g., IEC 62443).

About you
- Solution-focused and positive approach to complex engineering challenges.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
- Motivated to contribute to the energy transition and sustainability goals.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, international environment with a focus on continuous improvement.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics Engineering or related field.
- Advanced background in Substation Control & Protection engineering.
- Good understanding of HVDC, substation automation systems, and digital substations.
- Knowledge of configuration of IEC 61850 IEDs via vendor-specific and system configuration tools.
- Familiarity with engineering software such as Engineering Base, Creo, AutoCAD Electrical or similar tools is desirable.
- Knowledge of industrial cybersecurity and network hardening protocols tailored for substation control systems is advantageous.
