About the Role
We are recruiting a Mechanical & Electrical Technician to join our team at Fobney Water Treatment Works in Reading. You will use your mechanical and electrical knowledge and experience to inspect, maintain, fault diagnose, test, install, modify, or repair mechanical plant and associated electrical equipment safely, efficiently, and with minimal supervision. Your work will ensure our sites remain operational, helping to reduce pollution and improve Thames Water's environmental impact.
Your responsibilities will include carrying out scheduled planned maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment in compliance with company procedures to minimise plant breakdowns. You will investigate plant failures and carry out repairs promptly to avoid process interruptions, including diagnosing complex faults and repairing during incidents. You will provide technical advice, refer to up-to-date technical knowledge, and support or train technical trainees when required.
Equipment you will work on includes pumps and associated control gear, 3-phase motors, starters and controls, electronic control systems such as VSDs, automatic valves and penstocks, flow, level and pressure measurement devices, programmable logic controllers, variable speed drives and controls, chemical handling, and dosing equipment.
You will also participate in a standby rota following relevant training. All PPE and tools are provided.
Experience
You should be a time-served electrical apprentice with significant experience working in a true multi-skilled electrical capacity. Ideally, you will have mechanical qualifications (NVQ2/3) to enable you to inspect, maintain, fault diagnose, test, install, modify, or repair mechanical and electrical plant equipment safely and efficiently. Candidates with experience in either mechanical or electrical disciplines will be considered for development to dual-skilled status.
About you
You must have strong knowledge and awareness of health and safety issues. The role requires physical fitness as you will work in confined spaces after completing appropriate training. A valid driving licence is essential. You should be motivated, reliable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications include an electrical apprenticeship, ONC/HNC in engineering, NVQ, or City & Guilds Level 3 in Electrical Engineering. Mechanical NVQ2/3 upskilling is crucial to the role.
