About the Role

We employ close to 3,000 people across more than 20 countries, delivering innovative, cross-sector sustainable solutions. Our vision is to create a safe and sustainable world.
We are seeking a Senior or Principal Safety Consultant to join our Rail & Transit team. This is an excellent opportunity for professionals aiming to progress their careers and embrace leadership roles. You will lead safety engineering and assurance services across a range of rail engineering projects, contributing to the enhancement of safety protocols, risk assessment methodologies, and overall project quality.
This role offers the chance to deepen your technical expertise in rail safety while mentoring junior consultants and demonstrating leadership in a collaborative and innovative environment. You will be involved in complex projects including safety assurance management, safety approvals, and Common Safety Method (CSM) work for major infrastructure projects such as the National Train Control Centre in Dublin, Crewe Hub remodelling, and East Coast Mainline.
You will also support contractors with CSM and approvals for station works and lead safety assurance for new rail products including high-speed points systems, axle counters, and signalling systems. Projects span globally across Australia, the US, Canada, Asia, and the Middle East, with the flexibility to contribute from the UK without travel requirements.
Key responsibilities include leading complex rail safety engineering projects aligned with standards such as EN50126, EN50129, IEC 61508, and CSM-RA, managing multiple activities effectively, leading client workshops, and supporting business development through proposal writing and client engagement.
Experience
- Proven experience delivering safety engineering and assurance services to rail projects using standards such as EN50126, EN50129, IEC 61508, and/or CSM-RA.
- Background in risk management, systems engineering, and/or safety engineering.
- Experience in major rail infrastructure projects, preferably within the UK or consultancy sector.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and proactively balance workload.
- Experience supporting business development activities including proposal writing and client relationship management.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Cyber security experience is welcomed but not essential for this role.
About you
You are a motivated and experienced safety professional with leadership qualities and a passion for rail safety. You thrive in dynamic environments, enjoy mentoring others, and are committed to delivering high-quality, innovative solutions. You value collaboration and are eager to contribute to a diverse and inclusive workplace culture.
Qualifications
Relevant qualifications in safety engineering, systems engineering, or related disciplines are desirable but not explicitly stated. A commitment to continuous professional development and adherence to industry standards is expected.
