About the Role
Join AECOM’s Environment business as a Graduate Aquatic Ecologist supporting consultancy and advisory services across a range of aquatic and terrestrial ecology projects. You will contribute to the collection and analysis of aquatic survey data including fish, macroinvertebrates, crayfish, macrophytes, riparian mammals, and River Habitat Survey. The role involves laboratory analysis of macroinvertebrate samples in our Leeds or Nottingham laboratory and assisting with terrestrial ecology surveys. You will work closely with a network of ecologists and water scientists across the UK and Ireland, communicating effectively with project managers, clients, and team members to deliver high-quality technical outputs within programme and budget. Additional responsibilities include complying with health and safety and business management procedures, maintaining client relationships, providing urgent ecological advice when required, collaborating on multi-disciplinary projects, and supporting administrative tasks that enhance team development.

Experience
Previous commercial and/or regulatory experience is advantageous but not essential. Freshwater ecology experience and laboratory macroinvertebrate analysis are essential. Familiarity with aquatic ecology surveys including fish, macroinvertebrates, crayfish, macrophytes, riparian mammals, and River Habitat Survey is required.
About you
Strong attention to detail and numeracy skills. Ability to structure and prioritise work effectively within a team environment. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with confidence to engage with clients, colleagues, stakeholders and subcontractors. Proactive, motivated and able to work collaboratively. A full driving license and willingness to travel occasionally for site visits with equipment is desirable.
Qualifications
A degree in Aquatic Ecology, Ecology, Freshwater Biology, Marine Biology, Zoology or a related discipline is required. MSc or higher is preferred but BSc will be considered. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint is essential.
