About the Role
At Mace, our purpose is to redefine the boundaries of ambition by creating responsible places that bring transformative impact to people, communities, and societies globally. Join our expanding Sizewell C (SZC) team and contribute to one of the UK’s largest megaprojects, a 3.2-gigawatt low-carbon power station that will generate electricity for around 6 million homes for at least 60 years. This role places you at the forefront of the UK’s climate change agenda and energy policy.

You will be part of Mace’s responsible business team, delivering biodiversity net gain (BNG) and sustainable development across diverse consultancy projects. Working with pioneering clients, you will support technically challenging low carbon projects aiming for at least +10% biodiversity net gain, nature-based solutions for climate change, and BREEAM outstanding certification.

Your responsibilities will include supporting early project feasibility and design with biodiversity considerations, managing ecological surveys and assessments, completing Defra’s biodiversity metric, and preparing biodiversity gain plans. You will engage with stakeholders on biodiversity offsets, collaborate with local authorities, and support natural capital and ecosystem service assessments. Additional duties include technical assurance of ecology reports and plans, supporting environmental and social appraisals, managing biodiversity on construction sites as an ecological clerk of works (ECoW), overseeing licence applications, and advising clients on strategic ecology priorities and nature-based solutions. You will also deliver training and mentor junior team members.

Experience
- Proven experience delivering biodiversity net gain (BNG) projects and managing ecological surveys including Phase 1, UKHab, species surveys, and ecological impact assessments.
- Experience preparing biodiversity net gain calculations and reporting.
- Experience with natural capital and ecosystem service assessments using the environmental benefits from nature tool.
- Experience supporting urban greening factor (UGF) delivery and advising on planting species.
- Proficient in GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
- Experience working collaboratively with clients, local authorities, and stakeholders on biodiversity and ecology projects.
- Experience managing biodiversity on construction sites and ecological clerk of works (ECoW) duties is desirable.

About you
- A motivated and qualified ecologist with a strong understanding of biodiversity net gain delivery and sustainability trends in the built environment.
- Ability to inspire, challenge, and guide teams to deliver sector-leading sustainability targets.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical ecology requirements into clear language for diverse stakeholders.
- Committed to safety, integrity, and client-focused delivery.
- Enthusiastic about mentoring and supporting junior team members.

Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent qualification (e.g., N/SVQ level 5) in ecology or a related subject.
- Full membership of one or more professional bodies such as Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) (preferred), Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), or Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES).
