About the Role
Join AECOM’s dynamic Water team as a Principal or Associate Flood Forecasting Modeller and play a senior technical role leading teams to deliver real-time flood forecasting projects. You will help expand services with the Environment Agency and other clients, working primarily on flood forecasting but also engaging in wider hydrology and non-real-time modelling projects. Your responsibilities will include producing and reviewing Flood Forecasting Inception Stage Reports, developing and calibrating flood forecasting models such as PDM and Flood Modeller, and carrying out hydrological analysis using tools like ICM, HEC-RAS, MIKE 11, and FEH methods. You will produce high-quality technical reports documenting model builds and uncertainties, lead tender submissions, mentor team members, and build strong client relationships. Stay current with relevant legislation and guidelines while using AECOM’s project management systems to deliver projects on time and within budget. Be part of a team of around 700 water experts across the UK and Ireland, collaborating on projects from concept to completion in an inclusive, forward-thinking environment that supports career development, flexible working, and well-being.
Experience
Significant experience in flood forecasting modelling, particularly with Flood Modeller. Strong knowledge of Environment Agency requirements and preparing flood forecasting models compatible with their Incident Management Forecasting Systems. Proven ability to apply and calibrate hydrological models such as Muskingum-Cunge and Probability Distribution Model. Excellent analytical skills with experience processing and analysing hydrometric data, including gauge rating reviews.
About you
Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously and in a dynamic, deadline-driven team environment. Strong commitment to quality and continuous learning. Excellent communication and mentoring skills. Passionate about innovation and delivering impactful water industry projects.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or a relevant discipline. Strong GIS skills (QGIS, ArcGIS, and/or MapInfo). Practical knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, Anaconda, or Ruby is advantageous.
