About the Role
Are you ready to take the next step in your material management and waste career journey? AtkinsRéalis is seeking a pro-active and enthusiastic Principal Environmental Consultant to join our award-winning Sustainable Land and Resource Management Practice. You will be part of a team of material management, waste and contaminated land experts delivering innovative solutions to major UK infrastructure projects across transportation, energy, buildings and places, and water markets. This is a fantastic opportunity to work alongside industry leaders, contribute to high-profile projects, and grow your career in a supportive, collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment.
Your role will include preparation and leading the delivery of a wide variety of reports including material management plans (MMPs), verification reports, environmental waste permit applications, waste sampling plans, ground investigation/sampling reports, and risk assessments. You will support and lead client work development, proposal preparation, and contribute to bids for multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects. Providing technical guidance, constructive support, and mentoring to junior staff will be key, as well as supporting their technical development.
You will design, organise and undertake ground investigations to obtain information for materials and waste assessments, manage the implementation and verification of MMPs/environmental waste permits, and may work out of client offices or on site as required. Auditing contractors for compliance with material management plans, environmental waste permits, and waste legislation will be part of your responsibilities. You will liaise with clients, stakeholders, regulators, contractors, and internal disciplines to maintain excellent professional relationships that secure repeat business.
Working effectively as part of a team with environmental scientists, engineers, and planners, you will provide a consistent and integrated service to clients. Compliance with Health and Safety policies and procedures, including preparing health and safety plans and managing health and safety on site, is essential. You will develop your own competence and maintain CPD with support from the business. Managing your own work to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to quality and client expectations is required.
Experience
Relevant post-graduate experience with a proven track record of delivering work on time, on budget, and to quality and client expectations. Demonstrable understanding of material management, earthworks, and/or waste aspects on development sites including knowledge of relevant codes of practice and industry standards/guidance such as the Definition of Waste: Development Industry Code of Practice, Technical Guidance WM3, and Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016. Experienced in preparing technical reports. Proven ability to manage and mentor staff, manage time effectively, and work both independently and as part of a team.
About you
Degree qualified in a relevant engineering or science subject (e.g. geology, geography, hydrogeology, chemistry, earth sciences, environmental science). Achieved or working towards Chartered Membership of a relevant professional body. Flexible and prepared to take on new challenges. Full UK driving licence with the ability and willingness to travel throughout the UK and work from client offices and sites.
Desirable Criteria
Training in the use of HazWasteOnline. Attendance at CL:AIRE ‘Definition of Waste: Code of Practice’ training or experience writing MMPs.
