About the Role

An established environmental services organisation is seeking an experienced Senior Grounds Maintenance Technician to join its team based in Catford.

This is a hands-on role for an experienced grounds maintenance professional who can lead by example, maintain high standards across multiple sites, and support the day-to-day delivery of grounds maintenance operations.

The successful candidate will have strong practical grounds maintenance experience, excellent knowledge of horticultural practices, and the ability to supervise and support colleagues while ensuring works are completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

Key Responsibilities

Grounds Maintenance

  • Carry out a full range of grounds maintenance duties including:
    • Grass cutting
    • Strimming
    • Hedge cutting
    • Shrub and border maintenance
    • Pruning and planting
    • Weed control
    • Leaf clearance
    • Litter picking
  • Ensure all sites are maintained to agreed service standards and specifications.
  • Identify and report any issues affecting the safety, appearance, or maintenance of sites.

Team Support & Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day support and guidance to Grounds Maintenance Operatives.
  • Lead small teams on site and allocate daily tasks as required.
  • Monitor work quality and productivity levels.
  • Assist with the training and development of new and less experienced team members.
  • Promote a positive team culture and professional working environment.

Machinery & Equipment

  • Safely operate grounds maintenance machinery and equipment including:
    • Ride-on mowers
    • Pedestrian mowers
    • Strimmers
    • Hedge cutters
    • Leaf blowers
    • Spraying equipment (where qualified)
  • Carry out daily vehicle and machinery inspections.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained in good working order and defects are reported promptly.

Health & Safety

  • Follow all Health & Safety policies, procedures, and risk assessments.
  • Ensure safe working practices are followed at all times.
  • Wear and maintain appropriate PPE.
  • Report accidents, incidents, and near misses in accordance with company procedures.

Customer Service

  • Represent the organisation professionally when interacting with residents, clients, and members of the public.
  • Respond courteously to enquiries and resolve minor site issues where appropriate.
  • Support the delivery of excellent customer satisfaction across all contracts.
Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years' experience within grounds maintenance, landscaping, horticulture, or environmental services.
  • Experience supervising or leading small operational teams.
  • Strong knowledge of grounds maintenance practices and horticultural techniques.
  • Experience operating a wide range of grounds maintenance machinery.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • PA1 and PA6 Pesticide Application Certificates.
  • NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Horticulture, Amenity Horticulture, or a related discipline.
  • Trailer towing experience.
  • Experience working on local authority, housing association, or commercial grounds maintenance contracts.
  • First Aid qualification.
