About the Role
As part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2040, AWS is committed to reducing carbon emissions across our infrastructure. We are seeking a Senior Sustainability Engineer to drive carbon reduction in the design of our Data Centers across our rapidly expanding EMEA portfolio. You will work closely with the AWS Sustainability team and the Global Design Engineering team to reduce carbon intensity in current and future AWS data centers by creating mechanisms to identify opportunities for carbon reduction and tracking their success.
Our data center solutions are adapted to the many geographies in which we operate, with building materials, structures, and equipment tailored to local environments, available materials, and construction techniques. This provides unique carbon reduction opportunities on a building-by-building basis.
In this role, you will understand the design and functionality of AWS data centers globally, track carbon throughout project lifecycles, and work directly with construction teams and equipment suppliers to identify and implement carbon reduction initiatives. You will also own sustainability certifications for builds in your region, support public policy engagement with local authorities, and produce clear documentation such as design specifications, white papers, and reports.
You will be a key driver of sustainability initiatives for future generations of data center designs, bringing creative and innovative solutions while collaborating with diverse internal and external teams. This role offers a dynamic and inclusive culture that empowers you to own projects from concept to completion while having fun and working hard.
About the Team
The DCE Sustainability team advances AWS's goals of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and water positive by 2030. Our engineers have hands-on sustainability experience across the project lifecycle, from concept design through construction and commissioning. We serve as subject matter experts in embodied carbon, material decarbonization, and sustainability compliance, supporting the broader Data Center Design Engineering team which includes Architects, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Fire Protection, and Controls Engineers.
You will collaborate with internal groups such as Design Engineering, Construction, Equipment Procurement, Contractors Procurement, and AWS Sustainability, as well as external partners including material producers, equipment manufacturers, general contractors, consultants, regulators, and industry consortia.
