About the Role
Costain are working with Thames Water on a variety of water and wastewater projects and have fantastic opportunities for individuals to join our growing AMP8 delivery team, working predominantly across the Thames Valley and Thames South regions. Projects range from smaller capital maintenance to large civil new build schemes. The role of Assistant Quantity Surveyor is to assist in the administration and management of costs and contracts relating to projects. This involves supporting all aspects of work from initial tender to final account and close out, aiming to minimise costs and enhance value for money whilst achieving required standards and quality. You will work under the close direction and supervision of a more senior quantity surveyor.
Key responsibilities include preparing enquiries, analysing tenders, negotiating and managing allocated accounts including orders, payments, final accounts, and close outs in accordance with customer or company procedures. You will assist in the preparation and agreement of applications for payment or the assessment and preparation of payment certificates. The role plays a key part in capturing, managing, and communicating change and risk on the project in accordance with the contract. You will assist in preparing Project Control Reporting including project cost and value/EVA reports, budgets, and forecasts. Reporting to line management when contractual notices and correspondence with both customers and sub-contractors are required is also part of the role. Additional duties include assisting with project budget/cost reporting, record-keeping such as collating site records, preparing meeting packs, sending meeting invites, and taking meeting minutes. You will carry out supply chain performance reviews on allocated packages and contribute to value management and value engineering. Understanding and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations is essential, with all health, safety, and environmental risk situations brought to the attention of the Contract Leader or Project Manager.
Experience
Postgraduate or trainee quantity surveying experience is essential. Candidates should be proactive in self-development and professional qualification. An understanding or experience of business systems, spreadsheet development, cost analysis, programme evaluation and development, compensation event and/or variations assessment and evaluation is expected. Increasing knowledge of a variety of contract forms and options is required. Experience or appreciation of the risk management process for both schedule and cost and the use of Earned Value Management is desirable.
About you
You should have a strong attention to detail and be able to work effectively under supervision. Experience or appreciation of company policies, procedures and controls, operating office management systems including filing systems and document control and distribution is desirable. Ability to assist in drafting contractual correspondence on behalf of the project and project manager is advantageous.
Qualifications
Essential: Holds an RICS or CICES accredited degree, or is enrolled on an accredited part-time postgraduate degree with relevant experience.
Desirable: Enrolled and working towards full membership of either RICS or CICES.
