About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineering Manager to join Costain’s vibrant Engineering Design team, supporting secured frameworks and confirmed demand with major UK water clients including Southern Water, Northumbrian Water, Thames Water, Severn Trent Water and United Utilities. This role involves leading and coordinating multi-discipline engineering teams across the entire project lifecycle within the Water sector, including wastewater and clean water infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects. You will manage delivery from needs and solution identification, optioneering, outline and detailed design through to project completion in a design and build environment.
As a client-facing Project Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring engineering design delivery meets project schedule, budget, safety, environmental and quality requirements. This includes defining and agreeing requirements with clients, managing engineering resources, coordinating interfaces between Costain and project partners, and overseeing contractual communications. You will ensure projects are safe-by-design, sustainable, digitally enabled, cost-effective, compliant and technically sound.
This hybrid role is based nominally at either the Manchester or London office with flexibility to discuss working arrangements. Occasional travel to company, supplier or client offices or sites may be required.
Key responsibilities include managing engineering resource utilisation, ensuring clear understanding of project scope and design basis, coordinating multi-disciplinary teams, reporting to senior management, maintaining commercial focus to control scope creep, deploying company engineering delivery processes, identifying and mitigating project risks, and ensuring compliance with governance and approval processes. Building productive relationships and effective communication within teams and with stakeholders is essential.
Experience
Significant experience managing multi-discipline engineering teams through all stages of the project lifecycle on major Water sector contracts. Proven track record in wastewater and clean water projects within infrastructure and non-infrastructure environments. Thorough understanding of UK technical and regulatory standards and global best practices. Strong knowledge of project controls including schedule, cost, risk and change management. Experience in process safety, quality and environmental leadership. Demonstrated ability to manage client relationships and influence stakeholders.
About you
Collaborative, innovative and agile with strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal). Able to work effectively in a hybrid environment with regular presence in the Manchester office (approximately 40% office based). Willingness and ability to travel to client offices, project sites and suppliers as required. Commercially focused with a high level of challenge on project scope and delivery.
Qualifications
Essential: Honours Degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering related subject.
Desirable: Chartered Engineer status and membership of a professional engineering institution. Association for Project Management qualification.
