About the Role
The Environmental Advisor is a key member of the Distribution SHE team, providing essential technical advice to minimise environmental risks and enhance environmental performance across Large Capital Delivery and daily operations. You will offer professional guidance on environmental matters including ecology, pollution control, waste management, and project delivery. Acting as the company’s environmental conscience, you will ensure compliance and promote continual improvement.
Building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders is vital, driving commitment and modelling behaviours aligned with SSE’s values. The role involves travel for site visits and stakeholder engagement to improve environmental arrangements. You will contribute to fostering an effective, safe working culture while advancing improvements in the environmental management system.
Key responsibilities include ensuring collaboration to minimise environmental impact and risk, conducting environmental evaluations and audits with integrity, supporting the Distribution SHE Team and SSE Group, driving cross-business collaboration to complete projects with minimal environmental risk, and providing technical support for managing environmental incidents including investigation and communication.
Experience
- Degree level Environmental qualification or related discipline, or equivalent knowledge gained through experience in an electricity networks or utility business
- Expertise in legislative and guidance frameworks related to ecology, waste management, environmental impact assessment, consents, or a combination
- Trained and experienced in environmental incident investigation with a structured, systematic approach
- Ability to identify and analyse complex technical issues, understand risks, and implement appropriate solutions
- Experience drafting clear, unambiguous environmental documentation and conducting pollution investigations and environmental assessments
