Mechanic - Mechanical Engineering Field Service Engineer


Location
Santon Downham Workshop, East District, Thetford Forest, near Brandon. This workshop covers Forestry England's East, South and West districts, including areas from North Norfolk to Brighton such as Thetford Forest, Sandlings, Kent, East Sussex, Chilterns and Thames Chase Community Forest. Travel across districts will be required.

About the Role
As a Mechanical Engineering Field Service Engineer (Mobile Mechanic), you will deliver an efficient, value-for-money service supporting Forestry England’s operational objectives. Your responsibilities include maintaining and repairing vehicles and specialist forestry equipment to maximise fleet availability and reliability. The role involves inspections, servicing, repairs, welding, fabrication, and recovery work at operational worksites and other locations as required. Equipment maintained includes chainsaws, trailers, quad bikes, agricultural machinery such as tractors and attachments, as well as cars, vans, and 4x4 vehicles. This is primarily a workshop-based role with a mobile element requiring a proactive and flexible approach to frontline support. You will report to the Mechanical Engineering Chargehand / Service Delivery Administrator.

Experience
Experience in mechanical engineering, vehicle maintenance, and repair is essential. Proven ability to work independently and manage a mobile workload is required. Experience with a range of machinery including chainsaws, agricultural equipment, and vehicles is highly desirable.

You are able to work both in a workshop environment and on-site at various locations. Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are important.
Qualifications
Relevant mechanical engineering or vehicle maintenance qualifications are preferred. A full clean UK driving licence is essential due to the mobile nature of the role. You will be required to undergo a criminal record check and government baseline personnel security standard check as part of the recruitment process.
