About the Role
Are you ready to join a team of talented engineers and shape the future of energy infrastructure? We are currently looking to hire a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to deliver cutting-edge designs for energy storage, solar, and grid connection projects. Join a team driving the design of transformative renewable projects, making a lasting difference in the global energy transition. This role offers the opportunity to work on some of the largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in the UK and Europe, shaping the future of sustainable energy.
The focus of this role is renewables and energy storage, grid connections, and private networks at voltage levels normally between 11kV to 400kV. Typical projects include feasibility, optioneering, Front End Engineering Design (FEED), detailed design, and design assurance on existing or new build renewable generation, including pumped storage hydro, photovoltaic (PV), and wind – typically with collocated BESS.
Key responsibilities include:
- Working on large projects and frameworks with renewable energy generation developers, primarily in the UK and Ireland, with some global projects
- Undertaking FEED, design for planning, feasibility studies of energy storage systems including associated grid connections, control, and metering
- Designing the BESS balance of plant (BOP) systems
- Developing grid connection solutions (11kV–400kV) for energy storage and renewables
- Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams and clients to deliver innovative solutions
- Supporting bidding, project, and quality management activities
At AECOM, you will enjoy a range of core and personalised benefits designed to support your future and well-being, including career development opportunities, a flexible hybrid working model, technical practice networks, AECOM University, and volunteering days. Join us and be part of a global team delivering projects that create a positive and tangible impact around the world.
Experience
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- Experience in FEED design, detailed design, or owner’s engineer roles
- Strong understanding of renewable generation and energy storage technologies, particularly battery storage of all types and chemistries
- Experience designing HV grid connections, metering, and control requirements associated with battery storage installations, including BESS collocated with renewable energy generation
- Previous experience in consultancy, contractor, equipment manufacturing, or electrical utility sectors within energy
- Knowledge of grid connection requirements for renewable generation and energy storage, including G99, G100, and grid codes for transmission-connected assets
- Familiarity with electrical plant items and control systems such as transformers, cables, circuit breakers, HV Protection & Control
- Proficiency with software tools such as AutoCAD, EnergyPro, CYMCAP, Cableizer, Autodesk Construction Cloud, ETAP, DigSILENT
- Awareness of emerging technologies including hybrid systems, grid-forming inverters, long-duration energy storage (LDES), and alternative battery technologies
About you
- Strong team player with a client-focused mindset and excellent customer-facing skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively within multi-disciplinary teams
- Professional and proactive approach to project delivery and problem-solving
Qualifications
- Professional registration is desirable (e.g., Chartered Engineer or working towards it)
- Project management experience including budget, time, and quality management is advantageous
- Experience with multi-discipline engineering projects and site construction review is preferred
