We have an exciting permanent opportunity for a Senior Traffic Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team based in Manchester. This role supports the partnership between Amey and Trafford Council, delivering environmental and infrastructure services for Trafford. The One Trafford Partnership maintains and improves nearly 800 km of roads, 17,000 km of footways, 150 structures, 30,000 street columns and illuminated signs, and 37 parks, alongside waste collection services for 97,000 households.

The Trafford Highways Consulting account provides the local highway authority function on behalf of Trafford Council, comprising approximately 40 engineers, technicians and support staff across four teams: Traffic, Development Control & Drainage, Highway Maintenance and Highway Structures.

As a Senior Traffic Engineer, you will undertake design and provide technical support within the Traffic and Transportation design team. You will assist the Principal Engineer on a diverse range of traffic management and public realm projects.

Key responsibilities include:
- Preparing design solutions, drawings, reports, specifications and estimates at various project stages
- Overseeing design, development and implementation of traffic engineering solutions such as Traffic Regulation Orders, speed limits, traffic calming, pedestrian crossings and minor improvement schemes
- Supporting project planning, monitoring and reporting of resources and finances including gateway controls
- Preparing technical reports for internal and external stakeholders
- Providing project advice and design assessments
- Preparing and checking project design briefs
- Managing multi-disciplinary teams to deliver complex projects
- Developing and delivering programmes of work for the Client
- Undertaking technical checks and approvals of drawings, Health and Safety packages and communications
- Resolving technical issues to support project delivery
- Responding to enquiries from Councillors, the public and stakeholders
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with business partners, customers and clients
- Managing financial and resource reporting for Senior Management and Clients
- Preparing and developing bid opportunities with partners and stakeholders
- Reporting to DfT, TfGM and other stakeholders, supporting programme development and bids
- Assisting less experienced colleagues to ensure compliance with standards
- Contributing to continuous improvement of team services
- Taking ownership of personal development to build professional capability

Requirements

Experience
- Proven design experience within a traffic engineering environment
- Experience designing and implementing Traffic Regulation Orders
- Experience with a variety of schemes including parking management, cycling, traffic calming, priority working, minor highways and bus lanes
- Experience undertaking consultation with residents, businesses, stakeholders, councillors and third parties
- Knowledge of Community Engagement in a Traffic & Transportation context
- Experience working on Local Authority, Capital maintenance and/or developer-led schemes as part of a multi-disciplinary design team
- Experience in policy and report writing
- Experience developing Highway Capital programmes and budget monitoring
- Knowledge of traffic and highway design products, standards and protocols
- Understanding of street works permit schemes and CDM Regulations
- Experience developing safe systems of work and risk assessments
- Awareness of Road Safety Audit procedures

Qualifications
- HNC/BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering or similar
- Working towards or attained Chartered status of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Highways and Transportation or equivalent
- Knowledge of relevant design standards including the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions
- Understanding of relevant legislation including the Road Traffic Regulation Act, Local Authorities Traffic Orders (Procedure) Regulations, Traffic Management Act, Highways Act and Highways (Road Humps) Regulations
