About the Role
Forestry England’s Biodiversity Plan sets out a bold ambition for nature recovery in the Nation’s Forests. Working across five principal focus areas, Forestry England aims to restore resilient biodiversity, ensuring these forests provide the most valuable places for wildlife to thrive and expand in England.
Established in 2022, the Forest Wilding Programme brings together key focus areas to deliver a step-change in nature recovery. This includes species recovery projects reintroducing influential species such as beaver, wildcat, pine marten, white-tailed eagle, golden eagle, and wood ants across more than 30 projects nationwide. Alongside this, Wild Areas have been established on over 14,000 hectares of the nation’s forests, using innovative, evidence-based approaches to restore natural processes and enhance nature.
As a Wild Areas Officer, you will work as part of the national Forest Wilding Programme team and alongside the Wild Areas Manager to implement work packages aligned with the strategic delivery of Wild Areas across England. You will contribute to evidence-based nature recovery on the ground, collaborating closely with district teams and other colleagues focused on designated site management, ancient woodland restoration, nature network establishment, and timber production resilience.
Forestry England values making a difference for nature and supports a positive working environment that champions mutual support and a healthy work/life balance.
Experience
Proven experience in nature recovery, conservation, or environmental project management is essential. Experience working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams and managing complex projects is highly desirable.
About you
You are passionate about biodiversity and nature recovery, with strong communication and organisational skills. You are motivated to work at scale and pace, able to adapt to a dispersed team environment, and committed to delivering evidence-based conservation outcomes. You value wellbeing and teamwork and thrive in a supportive, collaborative workplace.
Qualifications
A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in ecology, environmental science, conservation, or a related discipline is preferred. Additional training or certifications related to project management or species conservation will be advantageous.
