About the Role

Our paid Intern & Placement programme offers a hands-on insight into the work we do and helps develop your skills and knowledge within civil engineering. Supported by targeted training, the programme is based on Arcadis’ core values, providing both technical training and personal development opportunities.

During the 12-month placement, you will be exposed to real projects and clients, gaining experience across highways, rail, energy, and water sectors. You will work alongside diverse, multidisciplinary teams on projects ranging from local schemes to major international developments.

Using advanced software and digital tools such as Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and BIM, you will design new infrastructure and assess existing assets for repair or reuse. You will learn about project delivery models, contracts, and commercial constraints, while collaborating with other disciplines and attending site visits to ensure designs are safe, buildable, and sustainable.

Civil engineers at Arcadis play a key role in tackling the climate emergency by delivering resilient, low-carbon solutions that maximize environmental, social, and economic impact.

Depending on your chosen discipline:
- In Highways and Transportation, you will help design roads, junctions, bridges, and active travel routes.
- In Water Management, you will work on waste and clean water infrastructure to ensure resilient and sustainable water supplies.
- In Rail, you will contribute to the design and delivery of railway infrastructure, including stations, bridges, drainage, and support structures, ensuring compliance with strict rail standards and safety requirements.

The placement includes some site visits and inspections, providing practical experience alongside your academic learning. You will gain exposure to all stages of project delivery, from concept to construction, on both UK and international projects.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop core engineering and consulting skills, preparing you to become a technical expert and make a meaningful impact through innovation and creativity.

Experience
You will be working towards a degree in a relevant subject (Placement & Intern only). Experience is not mandatory but a strong interest in civil engineering and a willingness to learn are essential.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to use technical knowledge to influence and consult stakeholders.
Willingness to travel and stay away from home when required (virtual working embraced where possible).
Comfortable with site-based working when required.

Qualifications
Roles within Highways and Transportation, and Water are open to candidates working towards a BEng or MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.
Roles within Rail require candidates to be working towards an MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.
