About the Role
At WSP, you have the opportunity to shape a career as unique as you. Join our Sustainable Water Management business, a national team of 300 water science and engineering professionals, experiencing strong growth and delivering flood risk management projects for Local Authority clients across the UK. We are seeking experienced Associate or Associate Directors to take leadership roles in our Liverpool office and other locations, working closely with Local Authority flood management teams.

Your role will focus on delivering and leading flood risk management projects including flood investigations, developing flood strategies, flood alleviation solutions, natural flood management, sustainable drainage master-planning, and supporting planning processes to ensure sustainable water environment solutions. You will balance technical, management, and commercial responsibilities while mentoring junior colleagues and contributing to the growth of WSP’s technical capability and innovation.

You will engage professionally with clients, develop trusted advisor relationships, lead delivery of high-quality technical outputs, manage projects effectively, and contribute to securing new business opportunities. A strong understanding of relevant legislation and policies such as the Flood Risk Management Act, National Planning Framework 4, SEPA guidance, and local authority policies is essential.

Requirements

Experience
- Proven experience in flood risk management working with local authorities or a combination of public and private sector flood risk management.
- Demonstrable experience managing budgets and leading delivery of flood risk management or sustainable drainage projects.
- Strong knowledge of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, Land Drainage Act, Planning Practice Guidance: Flood Risk and Coastal Change, and their application for Local Authorities.
- Experience preparing Local Flood Risk Management Strategies and Strategic Flood Risk Assessments.
- Knowledge of surface water drainage modelling and Sustainable Drainage Systems.
- Experience in technical report writing, checking, and confident presentation skills.
- Ability to mentor junior colleagues and liaise with senior stakeholders.

Qualifications
A degree in a relevant environmental, geographical, science or engineering discipline is essential. Chartered status with C.WEM, CEnv, CSci, or CEng is desirable for Principal level or evidence of working towards chartership for Senior roles.
