About the Role
Reporting to the Senior Business Manager, the Operations Manager has line management responsibility for supervisors and their teams and is responsible for the safe, reliable and effective delivery of the depot’s recycling and waste collections and street cleansing service. You will ensure high levels of customer service are maintained at all times whilst delivering on the contract’s KPIs. You will ensure all activities comply with contract requirements, Biffa Policies and Procedures, industry legislation and health and safety rules.

Key responsibilities include:
- Ensuring all Health and Safety, Biffa policies, procedures and legal obligations are understood and followed by all staff.
- Periodically reviewing and amending safety procedures as required or when new activities arise.
- Maintaining up-to-date training records.
- Developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with clients and internal/external customers.
- Attending client meetings as required.
- Ensuring timely delivery of contract reports and follow-up actions.
- Working with the Senior Business Manager to achieve financial and budget targets including overtime, staffing and revenue.
- Supporting staff training and development and reviewing training needs.
- Ensuring all staff have up-to-date job descriptions and thorough inductions.
- Supervising operational performance against contract standards.
- Implementing effective processes to monitor staff performance and promptly addressing poor behaviours or issues in line with Biffa Policies.
- Continuously reviewing waste collection and street cleansing operations to improve efficiency and add financial value.
- Ensuring safe operation and maintenance of all work equipment, both mobile and static.
- Confirming all staff are appropriately trained before using equipment, plant or vehicles.
- Maintaining all records and systems for effective and compliant contract operations, including regular KPI reporting and data requests.
- Assisting the company in achieving its business objectives and compliance with procedures.

Requirements

Experience
- People and health and safety management in a unionised environment, including handling disciplinaries, grievances and recruitment.
- Proven track record of working to clearly defined service delivery KPIs.
- Experience of vehicle management.
- Demonstrated success in delivering continuous improvement within an operational or service environment.
- Experience producing and analysing reports using Microsoft Office Suite.
- General knowledge of environmental responsibilities and health and safety legislation.
- Ability to deal with conflict and negotiate/manage suitable outcomes.
- Analytical skills with the ability to measure, monitor data and take corrective action.

Qualifications
Relevant qualifications in operations management, health and safety or environmental management are advantageous but not explicitly required. A strong focus on practical experience and proven results is essential.
