As Principal Engineer within the Smartgrids team, you will provide technical leadership on projects including distribution network design, private network design, renewable generation connection design, and electrical systems control and automation. You will act as the technical engineering lead, establishing and consolidating client relationships, supporting multidisciplinary project delivery, and assisting in the development of Arcadis’ Smartgrids capability.
You will take a leadership role within project teams by providing direction, managing delivery, and coordinating resources. Working closely with the Smartgrids lead and HR, you will support training, encourage professional growth, and facilitate development of team members. You will manage projects to meet time, quality, budget, programme, and health and safety targets while ensuring client satisfaction and technical compliance.
Additional responsibilities include promoting the Arcadis Smartgrids culture, providing embedded client support as needed, leading continual improvement in safety, and identifying new business opportunities. You will also engage in recruitment, mentoring, technical review, bid management, and maintaining a strong professional profile through industry engagement.
This role requires a proactive approach to innovation, quality management, and sustainable development best practices, with a focus on delivering high-quality, complex engineering solutions that meet evolving client and environmental needs.
Experience
Significant knowledge and proven track record in Smartgrids, distribution grid, private networks engineering, and renewable generation connection delivery. Extensive consulting experience on large-scale, complex projects in a client-facing role. Demonstrable experience managing multidisciplinary project delivery and coordinating design change processes. Knowledge of Grid, DNO, British, IEC, and ENA standards, as well as relevant modelling, analysis, and calculation software. Awareness of project delivery cycles, roles of EPC, IPC, and IDNO, and Net Carbon Zero initiatives including EV charging, electric boilers, and air source heat pumps. High-level understanding of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Grid Code compliance (G99 application process). Familiarity with CDM regulations and Principal Contractor responsibilities.

Qualifications
A minimum 2:1 degree in Electrical Engineering or Renewable Energy discipline. Membership of a professional engineering body such as the IET. Chartered Engineer status or ability to achieve this in the future. Maintains Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records and participates in relevant professional activities. Demonstrates a sound theoretical approach and evidence-based problem solving. Committed to sustainable development best practices and continuous professional growth.
