About the Role
At WSP, you will have the opportunity to work on landmark projects and collaborate with leading experts in your field. We are seeking a Principal Development Planner with a strong development-related Transport Planning background to join our Development team in Liverpool. Your role will involve working on a diverse range of projects including commercial, retail, and residential developments. You will contribute to transport strategies, masterplans, and provide support with Expert Witness evidence. You will assist private sector clients in navigating development proposals through the planning process and support public sector clients with transport and parking strategies and scheme development.
The Development team works closely with Highways, Services, Structures, and Environmental teams to lead larger multi-disciplinary development proposals. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include technical transport planning input, project management, and leadership roles where appropriate. You will mentor Early Career Professionals and support or lead transport planning input on small to medium scale projects, while collaborating with senior colleagues on complex multi-disciplinary projects. This role also offers the opportunity to develop commercial skills and expand your professional network to support business development.

Experience
- Leading technical work on Transport Assessments, Travel Plans, access strategy, parking strategies, sustainable transport, and active travel provision
- Working with guidance such as NPPF, DfT Transport Assessment guidelines, and Manual for Streets
- Preparing traffic flow information for Transport Assessments and Environmental Statements
- Setting up and running junction capacity modelling software such as Junctions 10 and Linsig, including scenario testing
- Project management including budget planning, resource planning, and invoicing on small to medium scale projects
- Carrying out or supervising conceptual junction design (priority, roundabout, signals)
- Excellent communication skills with confidence to engage clients, project teams, co-professionals, and stakeholders
- Mentoring Early Career Professionals in technical areas
- Proficiency in software such as Excel and Word
- Developing a professional network of co-professionals and clients
About you
You are an experienced Transport Planner with strong technical knowledge and hands-on postgraduate experience. You are confident in project leadership and mentoring roles and eager to grow your commercial skills and professional network. You embrace collaboration and are motivated to contribute to multi-disciplinary projects and business development.
Qualifications
Ideally you hold or are pursuing chartered status in a transport-related discipline. We welcome applications from candidates who may not meet all criteria but demonstrate relevant experience and potential.
