About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Waste Site SCADA Systems Engineer to join our Operational Technology (OT) Waste SCADA support team. In this role, you will maintain and support Thames Water’s Site SCADA systems, based on platforms such as AVEVA System Platform / Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, and Iconics. Your work will ensure the security, resilience, and availability of critical systems that enable remote monitoring, control, and data insight across wastewater treatment works and pumping stations. This role supports front-line operations teams and capital delivery projects, contributing to the future of Operational Technology in the UK’s largest water and wastewater company. You will help reduce pollution, improve performance, and drive innovation in a business delivering life’s essential service every day.
Key responsibilities include maintaining high availability of site SCADA platforms (targeting 99.2% uptime or higher), performing planned maintenance such as health checks, patches, and hotfixes, delivering system updates and upgrades, diagnosing and resolving faults across SCADA systems, HMIs, and PLCs, and completing disaster recovery planning including annual backups. You will implement and maintain security enhancements, proactively identify and mitigate risks, and participate in out-of-hours support for fault response and incident resolution.
Additional duties involve managing SCADA-related service requests, supporting OT access and alarm data needs, championing OT Change Management and Risk Assessment processes, providing design input and commissioning support for capital projects, and acting as a subject matter expert for site-based OT and SCADA systems. You will mentor ICA Technicians, collaborate with Operations and OT teams, maintain documentation, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement and automation.
Experience
- Hands-on experience in maintenance or delivery of SCADA/ICA systems such as AVEVA System Platform / Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, Iconics, and Allen-Bradley PLCs
- Proven ability to work closely with operational teams and provide excellent customer service to internal technical stakeholders
- Strong problem-solving skills balancing technical, operational, and customer-focused decision-making
About you

- Passionate about delivering reliable and secure operational technology solutions
- Able to manage conflicting priorities and deliver both reactive and project-based work (desirable)
- Experience or knowledge of the water or wider utilities sector is advantageous
Qualifications
- Recognised technical qualification in Operational Technology, ICA, or SCADA systems
- In-depth experience supporting and configuring AVEVA, FactoryTalk, or Iconics SCADA platforms
- Expertise in PLC-based systems, especially Allen-Bradley controllers
- Knowledge of LAN and IP-based communications within OT environments
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and common IT tools for reporting and analysis
- Working knowledge of basic LAN network troubleshooting and understanding of network design principles including VLANs, subnets, and redundancy protocols such as MRP or RSTP (desirable)
